Lily

I can still taste myself on him. My heartbeat skyrockets as we kiss.

He holds the back of my neck, and pulls my body into his. He does it like it’s what he wants to do for the rest of his life.

This passion between us, it’s deeper than physical. We’re bound in a way that’s hard to describe.

Existing without him seemed difficult at first. To kill time, I started painting. Slowly, I began to get used to being in my own company again. I got to the point where I could survive, even thrive, without him.

But now, being held in his arms, I realize I don’t want to.

I had tucked away all these feelings in a corner of my heart, but they’ve been there. They haven’t gone anywhere.

“I love you,” I say, breaking apart.

He smiles, and kisses me slowly, making my lips burn at the point of contact. “I can’t wait to make you my wife. I love you, Lily.”

His phone rings, disturbing the moment. He doesn’t even glance at it. It keeps ringing.

“Hold on, I need to take this,” he says, pulling me off his lap, and placing me down on the stool.

I curl my knees into my chest, and stare after him. His broad back flexes as he puts the phone to his ear.

I bite my lips as my eyes drop to check out his behind. It’s tight and muscular. And the way his jeans hang off of him, it’s enough to make any girl want to twirl her hair and flutter her eyelashes.

That’s why a spike of jealously poisons my blood when I hear a woman’s voice from the other end.

He looks behind me, and smiles, oblivious to everything I’m going through. “Yes, I found her,” he says. He pauses for a moment while the woman speaks. “You’ll get to meet her soon, Mom. I promise.”

Mom. Jeez, what’s wrong with me?

I shake my head, clearing the final vestiges of jealousy.

He hangs up, and turns to me. “There are literally dozens of people looking for you, you know,” he says.

“Really?” I smooth my hair, feeling kind of guilty now.

“I’m just happy I finally found you,” he says. “What would it take to get you to trust me?”

He moves closer, until he’s towering above me. I can’t get myself to meet his gaze. He tips my chin up, forcing me to look at him.

His thumb rubs over my lips. There’s a sense of ownership in that act. He does it like I belong to him.

And I do.

“I wish I could give you a good reason,” I say, leaning into his hand. “But it’s just the way I’m designed. It’s who I am, who I’ve become. Doubtful and a little paranoid. Can you deal with that?”

He nods. “I’ll love you no matter what.” There’s not an ounce of hesitation in his words.

“So much has happened between these four walls,” I say, gesturing around us. “I grew up here. It was hell, but I made it out. It took a little bit of guts, but mostly I was just desperate for a change.
